Germina’s business plan foresees the optimization of investments and accelerating the deployment of necessary resources for food production. In order to do this, we employ the best technologies in irrigation, use of clean energy and hydro-agricultural infrastructure.

Irrigation Scenario and Context

Brazilian agribusiness in a challenging environment

The world population, according to the United Nations (UN), is expected to increase by 10% by beginning of the 2030s, reaching 8.7 billion people. This expansion projects a need for production growth in the country which is 3 times higher than that of the previous decade. Brazil, a global leader in food production, is challenged to cope with the reduction of areas in traditional producing regions and expand the production to new frontiers in the North and Northeast, such as the region of Baixio do Irecê, in the Northwest of Bahia, to support the strong demand.

Irrigation: a sustainable option to increase production

Irrigation has emerged as a sustainable solution to make enterprises feasible in areas with arid and semiarid climate and irregular water resources throughout the year. Among the reasons that justify investments in hydro-agricultural infrastructure is its potential as a driver of the Brazilian agricultural expansion, enabling the following:
mitigation of production risks, which are increasingly severe with climate change;
increase in productivity in each harvest;
improvement of product quality (controlled standards and sanitation, facilitating certification);
streamlining of crop rotation, which is essential to break the continuous cycles of the same crops and avoid soil exhaustion.

About
the project

New approach for hydro-agricultural production

Baixio de Irecê is the first project in a portfolio of Public Projects for Irrigation (PPI) from the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), in partnership with the Company of Development of Vales do São Francisco e do Parnaíba (Codevasf) and the National Department of Works Against Droughts (Dnocs). The project’s influence area encompasses the municipalities of Xique-Xique and Itaguaçu, in Vale do São Francisco, northwestern Bahia. It is one of the most promising approaches to the Brazilian hydro-agricultural production, covering a total area of 105 thousand hectares, of which about 48 thousand are irrigable.

The PPI is divided into nine phases, of which the first two ones, involving 16 thousand irrigable hectares, are a responsibility of the Federal Government and are already in the occupation stage, with land regularization and infrastructure for production.

Germina’s development in Irecê refers to phases 3 to 9, that include 51 thousand hectares, of which 31.423 are irrigable, which places the company as a protagonist in the challenge of promoting an agriculture with sustainable bases in a very deprived region. The concession area will have an innovative system for the supply of primary resources for food production using irrigation: water, energy, and civil facilities.

Ambitious goals and benefits for 250 thousand people

Germina won the concession of the Irrigation Project of Baixio do Irecê in an auction carried out at B3, in São Paulo, in June 2022. The objective proposed is bold: to substantially boost the region’s economic, social, and environmental development, generating over 180 thousand direct and indirect jobs in the sectors of trade, agriculture, services and industry.

Germina expects to invest around R$ 1.1 billion in Baixio do Irecê over the 35 years of concession. In total, we estimate that 250 thousand people will benefit, directly and indirectly, in the area covered by the project.
